Большая организация, например страховая компания, паевой траст, банк, профсоюз или пенсионный фонд крупной компании, располагающая значительными суммами денег, которые она может вложить на фондовой бирже. Институты обычно нанимают своих собственных аналитиков и советников по вопросам капиталовложений. Как правило, они могут более сильно, чем частные инвесторы, влиять на настроения на бирже, а их политика часто может сказываться на ценах акций. Поскольку институты имеют возможность накапливать значительные пакеты акций компаний, они способны влиять на политику последних, информируя собрания акционеров о своем мнении, особенно в периоды переговоров в связи с предложением о слиянии или поглощении компании (takeover-bid negotiations).
